After a year of not doing the traditional Christmas routine the crowd has voted and the tradition returns. I have lived in this ward since I was a baby. It has been a tradition to hold a Christmas Dinner, have Santa visit with the children, and then celebrate with a pinata. Two pinatas actually, one for the little kids and one for the big kids. Throughout the years there have been those that have complained that it should be a religious celebration and not a celebration of Santa and candy. There has been a year or two in which they have tried something new and different. It's not the same. Everyone loves Santa and a pinata. And why can't we? Christmas is for the children. I understand that it is a religious holiday. I get that. And I teach my kids that. And we have Church lessons on Sunday to reflect that. And we have a Christmas Choir program to reflect that. And for the sisters in the ward we have a religious program at the Relief Society dinner. Why then is it so wrong to allow our children to celebrate Christmas with Candy and a Santa? I am grateful that this year the tradition returned and that the majority of the neighborhood families could enjoy an evening of fun together. And I am grateful to those that did the work to put it all together.
We had a dinner of ham, potatoes, salad, and dessert. Then Santa made an appearance.
Then it was time for the pinata. Kennedy is exactly like me and doesn't want to be embarrassed so it took some convincing to get her out there to give it a try but she did it and she liked it. Oaklan had never seen a pinata before so he just thought he was doing what the big kids were doing and hitting the box. He didn't know what was inside or what to do once the candy started falling. After his turn he would come running back to me so proud of himself. He also enjoyed clapping and cheering for all the other kids too. It was a fun night. Yes the kids were hyper from the excitement and sugar, but after all, that is what Christmas traditions are made of!
