Sit...Stay...SPEAK!

Sit, Stay, SPEAK!
No, I'm not referring to my dog.  My dog knows those tricks.  I'm referring to my son! Oaklan is two.  Asking him to sit still is of course a chore.  Asking him to stay out of trouble is only a dream.  Asking him to speak seems impossible.
We have known he is slow at talking.  We have asked around.  We have been told that as long as he's making an attempt he'll be fine.  Some say, "One day you'll wish he didn't talk".  Believe me I'm sure we will but it will be better than the grunts we get now.  He's not quiet, he just grunts.  UHHHGG,  UHH  HUH,  UHHNNN!  We even found out that he could attend Early Intervention preschool when he's three.  So when we scheduled his 2 year old check up we didn't think much of it. (Yes, I know it's late, it's because they started his shots after his casts were removed when he was an infant.)   The doctor told us that we could get into Early Intervention even before he's three and that we should give them a call.  He also scheduled an appointment with an audiologist just to make sure his hearing was okay.  So, 4 shots later and we were on our way to Oaklan's preschool Christmas program.  (more about that in the other post).  At the program my mother-in-law ran into a friend who happened to work with Early Intervention.  She introduced us to her and we said we would call her to make an appointment.  That was Monday.  The very next morning I got a phone call from Early Intervention.  I was told that she was sorry to bother me and knew that I was supposed to call her but that she had a cancellation and could fit us in on Thursday if we could make it.  That was also the same day that Oaklan had his audiology exam.  So first we went to Early Intervention.  We sat in a room and they had Oaklan play with blocks and color a picture and asked us questions about what he can and can't do.  He passed all of his tests except his speech.  So, we qualify for Early Intervention and when the new year starts we will start having a speech therapist come to the house twice a month to work with us.  They will teach us as well and him.  Then we went off to the audiologist and confirmed what we knew...he can hear just fine.  He has tiny little ears but they hear well.  He's just a stubborn two year old boy who doesn't want to talk.   I'm grateful for the small events that all fell into place this week and hopefully with a little encouragement this boy will soon learn to Sit, Stay, and SPEAK!

My 2 year old nephew started with the speech therapist in August. It has made a world of difference...now that he can communicate, he's a much happier child.

You'll be glad you got him started...
